Creative Voices

SPARK’s Creative Voices strand puts the voice of children and young people central to the design and delivery of cultural provision in Wakefield. The aims of the Creative Voice Working Group are to hear youth voice regarding arts and culture across Wakefield and to:

  • Work as a team to help and support each other
  • Work collaboratively and in partnership to deliver events
  • Challenge young people’s perception of culture and the arts, what it is, who it is for?
  • Create a panel of young people to coproduce youth arts programmes

Current Projects

Humanising Mental Health: We are working with Empath Theatre to tell the story of mental health in Wakefield.  Using research about the West Riding Pauper Lunatic Asylum (Stanley Royd Hospital) and reflections from today, young people are creating and sharing stories which will inspire insight into this important issue.

Funded by Wakefield Culture Grants and Live Well, Wakefield

Black to Green: We are working with the National Coal Mining Museum and Yew Tree Youth Theatre to create an exhibition and festival.  The work will be inspired by the Natural History Museum’s “Fix our Broken Planet,” and will explore how green energy can help us to do this and the importance of our natural world.

Funded by the Natural History Museum, Creative Minds and Prosper

Get Involved

SPARK’s Creative Voices Working Group are in the process of recruiting a panel of:

Arts Ambassadors – young people from across the Wakefield District aged 16 – 25 years old, who are interested in arts and culture and want to shape the cultural and arts offer as part of a new youth panel. This panel needs to be diverse and represent the whole of the Wakefield District.

With support from SPARK to develop skills and knowledge Arts Ambassadors will:

  • champion the arts with peers and spread the word about opportunities in arts and culture
  • help SPARK to connect with young people in the Wakefield District
  • feel confident to share their opinions and understanding with others
  • connect with likeminded young people from across the district
  • find out what young people want from arts and culture in the Wakefield District
  • co-produce relevant and inspirational events and programmes with arts and culture organisations to create opportunities for as many people as possible to benefit from the transformative impact of creative experiences
  • help break down barriers between young people and arts and culture
  • develop skills and understanding to help achieve your aspirations
  • shape the way the panel is run in future
